So, what has happened since I’ve been otherwise engaged? Everything and nothing, it seems. Pastygate has been and gone, the Govt. (which one is in at the moment? Don’t worry, they’re all the same anyway…) The usual worldwide carnage continues apace but it seems we are offered a brief hiatus as our tiny island hosts the 2012 Olympics. Proceeding better than anticipated, according to the media and powers that be, it almost stirs the blood and has encouraged me for one to make the truly Olympian effort to take the recycling actually onto the street rather than just limping wanly to the end of the path…I was even forced to play some Wii Sports with the youngest progeny, but got shouted at for winning. Apparently I’m only allowed to compete in sports that I am no good at…School holidays being what they are, I am heroically struggling to get any real work done………hang on…I’m being vociferously castigated again…back later!

Now, I’m sure we’re all grown ups and among friends. Therefore it gives me no shame to admit that on more than three occasions in the past I have partaken of a hot pasty, and I make no excuses, but also cold ones and the odd Cheese & Bacon wrap. I’m not by any measure proud of this previous period of my life, however shameful it may be. I would like to stress that at no point did I inhale, and immediately absolved any wrongdoing and calorific excess by strenuously playing badminton very badly whilst doing ‘The Hokey-Cokey’ I would now like to draw a veil over this unfortunate episode to spend my time trying to make my best pals even richer…

I always get a bit sad and melancholy when walking home in the rain and seeing a toddler’s handmade playgroup card or picture in the gutter, bleeding its joyous primary colours into the dampness. Why was it discarded? Was it accidentally lost when a busy parent was rushing to get home, or was the child so unnattached to it that they just dropped it on purpose? Will there be briefly inconsolable tears of disappointment on realising the precious artwork is lost forever, to remain as a mere memory? Or is it just a sad indictment of a selfish and increasingly crapulent society that places no store in simple innocent beauty? Or am I forced to accept with growing certainty, that I am a soppy old fool filled with mawkishly sentimental nostalgia for a time that never truly existed. Oh yes. That’s it. The last one!

At the arbitrary time interval that passed from 23:59:59 on 31/12/10 into the just as irrelevant 00:00:00 on 01/01/11 in the tick-tock of a clock, I was supposed to fashion a raft of lifestyle changes to improve what? I am at a loss to come up with an adequate explanation for this strange custom….

Nevertheless, a small list of intentions for the next 12months or so wouldn’t go amiss..

1: More drawing-less procrastination. (No explanation, those of you who know, will know!) ;-)

2: Look after oneself. Can’t work if you feel like 7 shades of unmentionable.

3: Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re by no means perfect, but you can be as nauseatingly American self-help booky as you need!!

4: As against the grain as it appears. Try to lay off the sauce….

5: Carry on singing, laughing, and finding joy in the tiniest of things.

6: Always be you, and never what anyone else wants to force you to be….

7: Stop being a miserable, soppy old bastard!!!

8: Sort out the web presence!!

Here endeth the lesson.

I’ve just finished my first listen of my newly arrived CD, and I have to say that I’m impressed but not surprised. I have been taken on a 45 minute roller-coaster ride that rises to the heights of whimsy one moment, to only plunge once more into introspection. Yet the redoubtable Neil Hannon manages to bravely walk the tightrope without falling into mawkishness or sentimentality.

Immediate favourites strike me as , in track listing order-‘Neapolitan Girl’, ‘Assume The Perpendicular’, ‘The Lost Art Of Conversation’, and ‘When A Man Cries’.

I may do further reviewiness later….In the meanwhilst, listen to it, it’s great!!!

Why, when you let another motorist in front of you with no inconvenience, do they give you a big hearty wave, but when you wait about five minutes for someone to crawl their sorry bottom up a narrow street as you ‘obviously’ wait for them, they don’t even acknowledge you? Tell me why!

Sleep is good.

I fancy some of my most pleasant moments in life have been while i have been asleep.

In my dreams I walk unfettered amongst monstrously compelling landscapes and urban labyrinths.

Yet I know that the moment my senses can bear no more, I have a parachute of mundanity that can drag me back to wakefulness, leaving merely a fleeting phantom recollection of my other, more real life.

I had a dream about frozen scampi the other night-it was awesome…….
